Estranged for years since a devastating and horrible tragedy back in 1964, siblings Adam and Jake reunite once again when unexpectedly, the former receives an emergency phone call from his brother informing him that their widowed mother Evette has been inexplicably missing for days. Without delay, Adam troubled by the alarming news, returns to his hometown with his wife Beth and baby Emma, only to be awkwardly welcomed with open arms by the pervading members of the local cult-like bereavement group called "Gateways" and their rather cryptic guru leader Lawrence. Undoubtedly, there is more than meets the eye, moreover, as the two brothers search for answers in the secretive neighbourhood, at the same time, the dark presence of a grim and haunting spectre seems to be strongly attracted by infant Emma's innocence. Is there a chance of eluding the malignant otherworldly visitor?
Leave your thoughts about Awaken the Shadowman.
VarietyDennis HarveyA slow burn of a horror drama that doesn’t build toward quite enough of a blaze to be truly memorable, Awaken the Shadowman nonetheless ranks a cut above the genre norm for its atmospheric and confident setup
Los Angeles TimesKimber MyersSomehow worse than its ridiculous title, Awaken the Shadowman is sillier than it is scary.
User ReviewBrian GGood creepy film for movie date night that has suspense and intrigue. So come join the gateway family and have everything you ever wanted but know that not anyone can have everything.
User ReviewMarcus IPoorly written and terribly acted. Please please don't waste your time. I don't review movies often but I'm trying to save you 1 hour and 30 minutes of your life. Watch something else.
User ReviewDaniel LA very slow paced thriller with an open-ended finale that leaves very little explained and a lot of disappointment.
User ReviewSuzanne GThis movie was worse than the grudge. It had so much potential but it's like the writers couldn't tie the thoughts together. I was extremely bored.
User ReviewJacqueline LThis movie had a lot of potential. Equal parts The Wicker Man meets Slender Man, and I have never seen a film so badly fail to utilize either element to even a fraction of what it could be. I genuinely need to know if they had to stop production before they wished to and try to make something of the disparate parts they managed to shoot, because the shadowman in question is never explained and the other antagonist they do attempt to explain never appears in the film again as soon as he is explained. This is a film where somehow, with so much going on, literally nothing happens. Events are hinted at, but nothing happens. More of the mystery is uncovered but nothing is really done about it, or the characters just seem to stand there listlessly and just do nothing while things unfold. A final confrontation occurs and yet still somehow it feels like nothing is happening or being done.
User Reviewm fFor the love of all that's Halloween and scary, save yourself the pain of watching this. As another review noted, NOTHING ever truly happens. The acting is the scariest thing about this movie. Who is the Shadowmsn? Gateway...church? Rehab? Ooohhh, creeps who sacrificed their babies for a better life. Gotcha. And then, while we waited to see WTH...the movie just...ended. Jean Smart clearly went broke after her 80s TV career, that's the only thing that explains her participating in this travesty. Or wait...maybe that's it. She sacrificed what remained of her name and reputation for money....glad I figured that out. Too bad I wasted 90 minutes doing so.
