Movie Reviews

CineVue - 10/10 by Patrick GambleTruly one of the most emotionally devastating films to have ever graced the big screen, Au Hasard Balthazar is an exemplary example of Bresson’s art that transcends its symbolic reverie to Christianity to become an eloquent prayer for the potential power of cinema to truly move us.
Sun Publications (Chicago, IL) - 10/10 by Josh LarsenAu Hasard Balthazar has the transcendent beauty of a Renaissance painting and the inspiring fire of a sermon. It’s one of those rare movies that could change your life, by making you rethink how you live it.
Empire Magazine - 10/10 by David ParkinsonIf you can see past the heavy-handed religious overtones you will encounter an inspired and deeply intelligent Bresson classic.
Chicago Reader - 10/10 by Dave KehrPerhaps the greatest and most revolutionary of Bresson's films, Balthazar is a difficult but transcendently rewarding experience, never to be missed.
Urban Cinefile - 10/10 by Urban Cinefile CriticsThe film does maintain a powerful mood throughout, a kind of stringency, and the fate of the humans fades into insignificance as the film draws to a bleak close.
Slant Magazine - 10/10 by Eric HendersonAu Hasard Balthazar possesses a strictly balanced, bemused-unto-neigh-indifferent attitude toward delineating between the wry and the glum, the sacred and the profane.
New York Times - 10/10 by Roger GreenspunThis is neither an easy film, nor, in the show biz sense, an entertaining one. It makes large demands upon its audience, and in return confers exceptional rewards.
Boston Herald - 10/10 by James VerniereAfter seeing the film, you will never hear a donkey's bray without thinking of Bresson's meek four-legged saint.
Chicago Sun-Times - 10/10 by Roger EbertBresson suggests that we are all Balthazars. Despite our dreams, hopes and best plans, the world will eventually do with us whatever it does.
Not Coming to a Theater Near You - 10/10 by Leo GoldsmithA deft, impassioned, and wrenching film, but also - emphatically, absurdly - a film about a donkey. Indeed, it hardly pretends to be much more.
