User Review - 8/10 by Gordon WAssault on a Queen (1966) This is one of those typical mens adventures that you would find in a pulp fiction magazine. The screenplay for this was done by none other than Rod Serling from a novel by Jack Finney who's famous for writing Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Good Neighbor Sam. It was directed by Jack Donohue who had directed Frank Sinatra in his earlier television shows. Sinatra plays Mark Brittain, a down-on-his-luck fishing boat captain, along the same lines as Bogart in his movie, "To Have and Have Not". Yes, he even has a black, alcholic side-kick, Linc Langley (Errol John). Then, Vic Rossiter (Anthony Franciosa), Eric Lauffnauer (Alf Kjellin) and Rosa Luccesi (Virna Lisi) show up and offer him a job diving for sunken treasure. Mark doesn't find any ancient ship wrecks, but he does find a sunken U-Boat. Eric used to captain a U-Boat during the war and has this idea of raising the boat. They miraculously raise the sub, take off 20 years barnacles and rust, and get it running again, not with the idea of selling it to a maritime museum for a bucket of cash, but to use it to rob the Queen Mary. Mark isn't very interested in getting into the piracy game, but he is attracted to Rosa's long legs and beautiful face. Admittedly, this is what keeps us watching this slow moving caper movie too. Rosa seems to be attracted to Mark, but we don't know if it's just to keep dragging him into this caper or not. There's more holes in this story than in a sea sponge, but we just feel compelled to ride it out and see what happens. Anthony Franciosa is great as the evil Vic Rossiter who can't seem to stop admiring other people's jewels.
User Review - 6/10 by Kevin M. WAlthough loaded with plenty of cool pedigree (written by Jack Finney, screenplay by Rod Serling, music by Duke Ellington, and Virna Lisi) this work lacks the finesse (the director) to put it over the top but remains interesting enough to warrant a curious visit. A group of strangers concoct a plot to rob THE cruise ship of the time. There's enough elements with zing to put this right on the edge of undeservedly forgotten cinema.
User Review - 6/10 by Allan COddball Frank Sinatra vehicle, where the chairman of the board plays an undersea treasure hunter turned modern day pirate. Frank discovers a sunken submarine and he crew wants to cash in on their find by robbing a cruise liner. There's an out of place jazzy score, a odd Ocean's 11-like crew (including the gorgeous Virna Lisi) and one of the strangest heist getaway chase you'll ever see. A seagoing heist film involving a submarine is pretty original, but the characters and plot points are all pretty by the numbers, which is surprising considering that Rod Serling wrote the screenplay, who is normally very reliable for turing out smart, original scripts. Not a bad film, but certainly not one of Frank or Serling's best.
User Review - 6/10 by Bill TUltrastrange Sinatra curio that has him playing an ex-submarine captain who gets hired to bring up a Spanish Galleon. The Galleon is not there, but he DOES find a sub, well, why not just bring up the sub then? Amazingly, (by himself) he does just that, after this is done, they hatch a plan to use the sub to... hijack the Queen Mary Cruise Ship. Yes, A CRUSE SHIP. This is one very strange movie, with plenty of plot holes, inconsitstencies, and general oddness all around. I'd love to hear the back story behind this one. No wonder this is so hard to find.
