Movie Reviews

Time Out - 9/10 by Wally HammondThere are coded messages of the tribulations of the artist here, and also a playful, mischievous comedic tone that allays any feeling of self-absorbtion on the director's part. Astonishing.
AV Club - 8/10 by Keith Phipps[Paradjanov] recreates the past with an exaggerated sense of myth and magic.
User Review - 10/10 by Pavandeep SA brilliant piece of art, really brilliant use of colours and environment to prove a tale from a cultural point of view, a surrealistic journey into traditions and culture. It's like Godard, " 1+1 = 2 but what does + means". I may have quoted wrongly, but whatever, this film is one where each shot has a special meaning, able to stand up and work the whole film, for wht it is, a pure cinematic journey.
User Review - 10/10 by Ru HA true masterpiece - an exploration of Azeri culture, national costumes, music, etc. Sergei Parajanov was called "enemy of the Armenian state" after directing this movie about Azerbaijan (Azerbaijan and Armenia were and still are involved in a territorial dispute, which resulted in tragic losses for both sides - bloodshed, refugees, etc.). Parajanov proved to be a true artist and finished the movie despite pressure from his government. Brilliant film - thumbs WAY UP. I would say one of the top 5 films in the history of cinematography and film.
User Review - 10/10 by Howard GUtterly bizarre, almost incomprehensible, beautiful, yet a superb piece of high camp at the same time. A huge influence on my music, too. I cannot decide whether the monotonous, guttural Georgian voiceover improves or spoils it ...
User Review - 10/10 by Lenard KWorth a watch for the "Wedding Of the Blind" sequence alone.
User Review - 10/10 by Immaculate EThis is my favourite movie ever, I can't get tired of watching it. A very simple and traditional story, but all the rest (visually, musically) extremely creative. And as guest star, the great Alim Qasimov!!
User Review - 10/10 by Atlas oSaw this at LACMA on Saturday. Surreal & beautiful. A delight. the other Sergei Paradjanov movie shown that evening was his 1959 'The First Lad/Pervyy Paren': totally corny and kitchy. Ah the beautiful Soviet youth, enjoying a blissfully healthy life on a collective farm! Also worth seeing as an example of Soviet era films.
User Review - 8/10 by Pinar Ait does not look like anything that i have seen before. great visuality and textual symbolism. amazing!
User Review - 8/10 by David SNot as great as Parajanov's Sayat Nova, but still a masterpiece! I loved how the dialogues are narrated, the beautiful Azarbaijani clothes, music, dances, costumes. Parajanov is a rare director, his visual style is extraordinary!
