Combustible CelluloidJeffrey M. AndersonThis great film by Andrzej Wajda is considered the greatest Polish film ever made, and I'm sure that's not too far off the mark.
The SpectatorIsabel QuiglyComplex, tender, agonising, it makes a country's moral dilemma as personal as love, and the pain of moral disillusion as immediate a torment as, say, disillusion in love.
GuardianDerek MalcolmWajda's deeply romantic and personal vision, inspired by both Italian neo-realism and by the more baroque images of Expressionism, makes Ashes and Diamonds a gripping experience.
New York TimesBosley CrowtherZbigniew Cybulski as the hero is sensitive, attractive and alert -- a lad with humor and compassion. One is strongly drawn to him.
VarietyVariety StaffTaut thriller about immediate postwar Poland also has a heavier theme of the futility of killing and violence. Its technical knowhow, fine acting and directorial prowess make this an above average drama.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzThis taut political thriller is a fine example of one of the first Polish New Wave films.
KPBS.orgBeth AccomandoCybulski, called the Polish James Dean, gives a broodingly intense performance.

User ReviewJosh PIncredible film about a pair of Polish Nationalist freedom-fighters that are ordered to kill a major Communist official on the last day of WWII. However, they accidently kill two innocent people before discovering where the official is. Intriguing and extremley well acted movie that perfectly captures the political enviornment of Poland at the dawn of a new era of uncertainty. I will have to check out more Wajda films a.s.a.p.
User ReviewAaron WPensive, badass and so damn beautiful. There were a couple flaws; a few parts seemed to drag a bit, but Jesus, this thing had some gorgeous scenes and I find it hard to fault the film for such small transgressions. Zbigniew Cybulski has an almost James Dean feel as the protagonist, and Ewa Krzyzewski makes a lovely and believable love interest. Looking forward to more Wajda.
