Full Plot Details

Anwar is a Muslim who lives a middle-class lifestyle in Lucknow, India, along with his mom, brother, and Bhabhi, Suraiya. Anwar is doing a research on ancient Hindu Mandirs. They rent out a room to a poor widow and her attractive daughter, Mehru. Anwar falls in love with her. Anwar is certain of Mehru's love for him, but is shocked when he finds out that she has eloped with Udit, his Hindu friend, who is about to immigrate to America. He informs her mother, who in turn calls upon her nephew and other kith and kin, to locate Mehru. They do locate the couple abroad a bus, Udit is killed, while Mehru is beaten and ultimately hangs herself. A guilt-ridden Anwar takes shelter in an ancient Mandit in Dholpur and his bag, which contained drawings of Mandirs and notes on 'Lord Krishna', 'Devi Maa Meera', and 'Mehru'. This bag ends up with the Police and they believe that Anwar is a terrorist who is planning to detonate bombs in sacred Hindu temples. The place is surrounded by Police, politicians who are anxious to win the Hindu vote, the media, and a huge crowd who are here to see the show. Anwar contemplates his life and gets visits from 3 people. The first is an extremist Imam, who tells him to kill himself rather than surrender; the second is Police Superintendent Ashok Tiwari, who wants him to surrender quickly so that he can be with his ailing wife and young daughter; and the third is media-person, Anita, who wants a live interview so that she can establish her credibility with her boss. Set amongst post 9-11 scenario, amidst the craze for Valentine's day, Britney Spears, Osama Bin Laden, George W. Bush, and the American way of life, Anwar must now examine his options - the question is what will he ultimately decide?

User Review - 8/10 by Sanyam JYou watch a movie like Anwar and immediately you think to yourself: 'These are the sorts of movies India should be submitting to the Baftas and the Oscars', and Manish Jha delivers this incredible story note-perfectly. Anwar is, at heart, a love story and unfolds to reveal its subject in its broadest sense: (love of one's career, love - or lack of love - for one's country etc.) and also captures the true spectrum of love: the blissful awakenings, the pleasure, the joy and the rejections, refusals and slow breaking of hearts. Stunning visuals combine with a cast of characters so brilliantly conceived one could almost find them in the pages of a novel by Vikram Seth and along with deft performances, editing and dialogue, present one of the finest films to come out of Hindi cinema. Anwar (the film) is thought-provoking, questioning, unhappy, longing, haunting and fundamentally achieves what we need cinema (from time to time, at least) to be: the sort of medium that shakes us from our slumber with explosions and loud shouts, demanding us to listen, to have our ideas and beliefs challenged and queried.

If politician's affair doesn't turn out to be right he will close all the stores selling Valentines day stuff. Good Art ( Imdependent) movie. A little slow in the begining but then it gets better. I dont think its about the issues of Hindu and Muslims. It just shows how people are still backward in our coutry and they seriously need to stop thinking that stalking is love. Song "Mere Maula" is one of the most beautiful song I've heard lately

User Review - 6/10 by Nazzmatazz PI have mixed feelings about this film. The first three-quarters of it were disappointing and left me feeling confused as to what kind of film was being made. For instance, whilst Rajpal Yadav is an entertaining comedian, his scenes were an unnecessary distraction in this movie. Also, some of the dialogue seemed contrived and the scene where the politician visits his mistress was melodramatic and pointless. This did not fit in with the slow and subtle pace of the film and it's philosophical musings on love as voiced by Vijay Raaz's character. I was ready to give up on the film by letting myself fall asleep, until the final half hour, when it went from a 2-star worthy film to a 4-star thriller. Suddenly things got gritty and interesting with the love-triangle and the way it tragically unfolds. Somehow, the main character, Anwar, finds redemption through an unredeeming act. The film would be much better if were shortened significantly and it's style made more consistent. The focus should have remained on the three lovers, as the strength of the film is the dark turn their lives take. Also, the cinematography was stunning and the songs were beautiful. I'm glad I didn't miss the ending, but due to the underwhelming first hour & a half, I can only give the film 3 stars overall.
