Laxmi lives a poor lifestyle in a small village in India along with her husband, Kishtaya, who is a deaf-mute. Both husband and wife work for the wealthy landlord. The landlord's son, Surya, has to cancel his studies and return home to look after the estate, as well as formalize his marriage to Saroj, the girl he was compelled to get married to when he was very young. Shortly thereafter Kishtaya is apprehended stealing toddy from the fields, is severely beaten, left senseless, and when he recovers he absconds, leaving Laxmi alone to fend for herself. Surya finds her attractive and starts an intimate relationship with her, much to the chagrin of the rest of the family. Things only get worse when Saroj moves in to live with Surya - compelling him to make a final decision about a visibly pregnant Laxmi.

Time OutRod McShaneBenegal's first narrative feature mostly recalls the modest realism of Satyajit Ray.
User ReviewMoe MThis is a brilliant social commentary by Benegal.

User ReviewMohamed Nafter several decades this film of shyam benegal one among the legendry director.this film i think the first film for shabana azmi got her into international fame.outstanding performance.
User ReviewAvradip SBrilliant start, brilliant ending some lax moments at the middle. The background score really let down the movie. I felt it would have been a masterpiece if shortened and music was used more judiciously. Its definitely a must watch, but for me it hasn't reached that level of 'Satyajit Ray" films because of the length and background music.
User ReviewHeather KThis film has a meditative approach to story telling that allows the story to unfold without explication. It is an excellent, timeless story performed with restraint. There are only a few minor clues to date the film. The characters are complicated and compelling. The pace, low key acting, and documentary quality (yet beautiful) cinematography lend authenticity to the drama.
