Finally, this movie deals with the rivalry between Dr. Robert Gallo, the American virologist who previously discovered the first retrovirus and his French counterpart at the Pasteur Institute, Dr. Luc Montagnier, that led to disputed claims about who was first to identify the AIDS virus.

Movie Reviews

Los Angeles Times - 8/10 by Howard RosenbergAnd the Band Played On adds its own snare-drum resonance to the AIDS catastrophe, beating elements of Randy Shilts' journalism into a passionate, incisive condemnation of the government's public health policy regarding this epidemic.
Independent (UK) - 8/10 by Sheila JohnstonI enjoyed seeing A-list actors in the sort of small supporting role they would never otherwise accept. And they got the film made.
Variety - 8/10 by Tony ScottAs a TV movie about a highly sensitive subject, overall it's a moving experience.
Reel.com - 7/10 by Sarah ChaunceyNo production could accurately reproduce Randy Shilts' chilling account of the early days of AIDS, but this comes close.
Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC) - 7/10 by Ken HankePretty powerful TV film about the AIDS epidemic and government inaction.
User Review - 10/10 by Erin MJust watched this movie again last week, for probably the fiftieth time. Amazing story of how the CDC, San Francisco's gay community, the French and American scientists learned the causes and effects of the AIDS virus.
User Review - 10/10 by Juan OI saw this film back in 1993, in college, and I was just moved. If you are not familiar with the history of AIDS and how it started affecting us as a nation, this is the movie to see. It wil move you and anger you to know how incompetent everyone, including he Reagan Administration, played to our fears instead of addressing the problem and to the spread of AIDS as only a gay disease... WRONG! Now today, 25 years later, it saddens me to hear and to know people who have died of this disease. It is still scary.
User Review - 10/10 by Jonathan BThe best made for television movie that I have ever seen. It's hard to write a review on this film, because Im afraid I wouldn't give this film the recognition it deserves. This film tells the story of how AIDS became an epidemic and how it affected the lives of many different people. The film starts of with Dr. Don Francis (Matthew Modine) traveling to the Ebola River in the late 70s trying to figure out as much as he can about the Ebola Virus, the title in the beginnig says that the Ebola Virus was not AIDS but it was a warning of things to come. The film then tracks how the disease spread throughout the world and how Don Francis and the CDC try to figure out everything about the virus. The film focuses on the politics and the effects on people that AIDS had in the 1980s, and today. This film is one of the most brilliantly casted films that I have ever had the good fortune to witness. Matthew Modine gives such a graceful and powerful performance as Dr. Don Francis, he tackles Dr. Francis's attempts to try and figure out the virus from the inside and out. Matthew Modine really deserves alot of credit in the film that is destined to be one of the greatest performances captured on screen, and credit for giving such a beautiful performance, when he enters each scene he handles it with such a serene grace and vulnerabilty. I wish this film would have been released in theaters so that he could have won an Oscar. Ian McKellen gave one of the best performances of his career as Bill Kraus, a gay rights organizer in the city of San Francisco, who later gets infected with the terrible disease. B.D. Wong just lit up the screen in his performance as Kico Govantes, Bill's lover and best friend and lover, the pair of them really lit up the screen together. Lilly Tomlin gave a dynamic performance as Dr. Selma Dritz, a doctor and a gay rights organizer in San Francisco, who mediates between the gay community and the government. One person who I thought really shows his grace of his art of acting is Richard Gere, as a stage choregrapher who learns that he is infected with AIDS, and helps the CDC with their research. But the one performance that broke my heart was of Swoosie Kurts as a woman who went to the hospital for surgery and recieved a contaminated blood transfusion, the scene is so heartbreaking when her and her husband figure out she is infected, but Swoosie pulls it off so beautifully. Donal Logue gave one of his screen debuts as Bobbi Campbell the first AIDS poster boy, he really shows such tenderness in this performance. Alan Alda played Dr. Robert Gallo, a selfish doctor who really didn't show an interest in finding a cure, he just wanted to dicredit the French and tried to say he discovered the virus, Alan Alda was really brilliant in this performance. And the Band Played On is truly a Spellbinding film that gets better and better with each viewing. I really have to applaude director Roger Spottiswoode and screenwriter Arnold Schulman for crafting such a delicate yet heartwrenching film. I don't care what anybody says when you see this movie the ending montage will make anyone cry, it show all the famous people who were afflicted with AIDS and its set to Elton John's The Last Song, its so heartbreaking, but its just enough for anyone to get the picture about this illness and how it can affect anyone. This film is truly a beautiful motion picture and I give it ****
User Review - 10/10 by Bradford Gvery very good movie, shocking chilling and what not
User Review - 10/10 by Patrick MI believe my mother owns this movie on VHS and it is simply one of the most provocative films you'll ever see. It's amazing how two of my favorite top twenty at the time of this writing are made for tv movies, but this one was incredible. The movie is about the AIDS virus when it first hit, how it was first spread and all the lives that it affected. The cast is off the charts, famous people are in the double digits in this movie, not just one hit wonder actors. The movie dealing with AIDS does focus a lot on the subject of homosexuality of males, mainly because they believe that is how it first started. I think my interest in the movie is not just the drama of it, but I've always wanted to be an immunologist or someone that finds the cures for diseases. It's incredible how they mix in the political aspect of how the government and President then, Ronald Reagan would not even recognize the disease. They just kept ignoring it, thinking it would go away. Well it hasn't and many people in the world are suffering because of it. This is simply put a movie that will open your eyes, educate you as to what really happened, and it's something that stays with you. The song that is played at the end of the movie is a perfect song for your funeral to, since I recently took that quiz, it's by Elton John, it's called "The Last Song", and you should give it a listen as well. Combining it with the end of the movie, the information and scenes they show you while it plays will make practically anyone tear up. It's a perfect movie in my opinion.
