Time OutJoshua RothkopfIf the documentary lacks anything, it's a firmer grasp of Springfield's own transformation, from "kind of a dick" (per ex–MTV jock Mark Goodman) during his heyday to a giving, appreciative showman. Call it humility, shaded with weird, two-way neediness. Jesse's girl may have dodged a bullet.
The Stranger (Seattle, WA)Kathy FennessyI found [Rick Springfield's] relationships with his fans genuinely touching.
Scene-Stealers.comEric MelinAlthough it veers dangerously into whitewash territory several times, the movie wears its heart on its sleeve, which is appropriate for a film full of Springfield's poppy hard-rock music and the unbridled enthusiasm of his loyal fans.
The New York TimesAndy WebsterAn agreeable documentary about the pop singer Rick Springfield and his legions of female fans.
VarietyJohn AndersonWhile she creates an affectionate portrait of the charismatic musician, helmer Sylvia Caminer is really concerned with the meaning of fandom; anyone harboring an inexplicable or arcane passion could conceivably be interested.
Village VoiceSimon AbramsAn Affair of the Heart's focus is so vaguely sketched out that it ultimately could be about any grateful artist who enjoys a modicum of celebrity years after his initial success.
The Hollywood ReporterFrank ScheckThe result is more promotional film - Springfield happens to have recently released both a new album and an autobiography - than intriguing sociology, although the rabidly intense middle-aged female fans on display are probably deserving of psychological study.
User ReviewJackie JI saw this screening of "An Affair of the Heart" for the first time yesterday at The Boston Film Festival. At first I thought "eh, it's just another film about another rock star!" But this was more than that. As a fan of Rick Springfield for 30+ years I have to admit this was incredible! I have my own story where I too have connected with Rick on more than just a fan related level. So I can certainly understand the fans in this film and how Rick has impacted their lives. As well as my own! I laughed during the film and even at times even cried during this film because I know just what kind of caring, kind hearted, friendly, down to earth human being Rick really is. He absolutely ADORES his fans.. ALL OF US!!! I absolutely recommend if you are a fan, or even if you are not. This is a great documentary that touches on so many levels and is worth seeing! I really hope this movie is released nationwide because I would certainly love to see it over and over again. And will most definitely buy it if it is released on DVD.
User ReviewEmmanuel LTo my surprise I absolutely loved AN AFFAIR OF THE HEART and I'm not even a Rick Springfield fan! I actually saw it twice when it premiered here in Toronto because I loved all the personal stories of how Springfield helped change and inspire so many lives. And the sense of community amongst the fans over the years and decades was so heartwarming to see. This documentary is so much more than what you think it might be about. Just go and see it!
User ReviewGiovanna CI saw this movie on Saturday and it was great! As you see the fans in the movie connect to a part of their youth, I too did the same but with a deeper look at what we don't normally think about, the people he singing to and his true felt insights. I am not a crazy fan follower today but I did have a big poster of him in my room @13, loved his music and couldn't wait to see Noah on GH. I am 40 years old with teenagers of my own now. The movie not only transcends the ages it also brings out the emotional element of Rick Springfield and the fans as they share their special experiences on screen. A must see for all!
