In the spring of 1942, following the blockade run that took General Douglas MacArthur and his staff from the Philippines to the safety of Australia, the survivors of a bombed and sunk PT boat make their way to shore. The skipper tells his men they have top priority passes if they can make their way to Del Monte airfield two hundred miles away, and advises them to split up into pairs. Ensign Chuck Palmer and crewman Jim Mitchell finally reach Tacloban on the island of Leyte. In an American mission school, Palmer meets Jeanne Martinez, who is urgently trying to see the officer in charge with a request for help for a relative, and he also learns that the Japanese have captured the airfield. Palmer tries to make Australia by a boat that sinks in a tropical storm, and has to swim for shore. All through 1942, Palmer and the other survivors dodge enemy patrols while living off the land.

Movie Reviews

Film4 - 9/10 by Richard LuckA fine film that almost lives up to its mouthwatering title.
New York Times - 4/10 by Bosley CrowtherThere certainly is no accounting for the mechanistic nature of the script, for the lapses in continuity or for the lameness of the professionals in the cast.
User Review - 8/10 by Paul DNot a bad war film from a man who specialized in crime stories.
User Review - 6/10 by Jimbo SIn this I saw a different side to the swashbuckling Tyrone Power I was used to. Still very much a hero, but in a US Naval officer sort of way. A good flim with varied content and positive tempo. The Japanese enemy seemed a bit watered-down, however, and were the weakest point of a fairly noble exercise.
User Review - 6/10 by Paul CEnjoyable World War II story, although there is precious little in the way of fighting. Actually shot in the Philippines, it is refreshing to see a film with a different perspective and Tyrone Power delivers as the pioneering Ensign Palmer. Little known little seen but worth seeking out.
User Review - 4/10 by Matt MThe account of a group of American guerrilla fighters in the Philippines, waiting for MacArthur to reach the country that has been taken over by the Japanese. Left alone in enemy territory, the only signals they are sent is in messages printed on the back of cigarette boxes and received through homemade transmitter. The film is quite dull and outdated. As a matter of fact, overall it seems as inventive as its title. There is never a real feeling of tension, because an awkwardly placed love affair sucks a lot of life from it. In the end, this doesnâ(TM)t stand out from many other films of the kind, and it remains a somewhat anonymous Fritz Lang film.
