The Film StageDan MeccaWe’ve gotten plenty of sports films over the years, but precious few that wade into the deep, dark machinery that fuel the underdog stories and inspirational tales we love to love.
Common Sense MediaBrian CostelloProvocative sports movie on amateur athletics; cursing.
Movie NationRoger MooreAmateur shines a light on a seriously dysfunctional system. It’s a sell-out updating of “Hoop Dreams” for the viral video era, a sharp-edges-rubbed-off film that holds interest even as it loses some of its testy edge drifting towards a wish fulfillment fantasy conclusion.
The Daily DotEddie StraitCondensing the story takes the air out of the ball and renders the movie flat. What's left feels like a jumble of story threads that don't cohere.

User ReviewSecond GThe first film of Ryan Koo and it's amazing!! My name is Stefano Parodi, and today I'm going to write a movie review. The title of the movie that I'm going to review is Amateur, it is my favourite movie. The movie lasts 1 hour and 36 minutes. The genre of this movie is sports drama and was directed by Ryan Koo. The actors that stars in this film are Michael Rainey Jr. as the main character Terrone, Brian J. White as the father of Terrone and Josh Charles as the manager, this 3 are the most important characters. They had good performances, because they acted very good. The producers of this movie are the director Ryan Koo and he was helped by Jason Michael Berman and Chip Hourihan. The record of the movie lasts less than a year. This movie is not very popular, because is a Netflix film and it didn't was in the cinema. It takes place in USA, it's about a boy of 14 years old who is very good playing basketball in his school, but his team isn't very good. Some time later a manager from a better high school contact his father to take him to his team, there it begins his story. The story was very interesting, because many things happened that changed the boy's life a lot, and those things can happen to any boy in real life. The cinematography in the movie was very good because there were very good shots that made the scenes of the basketball games more exciting. The soundtrack of the movie was very good, because very creative singers made songs related to the basketball. The movie didn't had a lot of especial effects, but in the basketball games the cameraman's made very good shots that made the games more interesting. In my opinion this movie is a 10/10 points, because it was so interesting and it's about a theme that I like. The fans are going to be happy with this movie because is very interesting and exciting and taught us a lot of things. The people should watch this movie because is very interesting and have to be more supported and known by the people. This movie taught us that we have to follow our dreams and to never give up.
User ReviewGracelyn CInteresting film that hits on ways young basketball players are exploited from a young age. Excellent job by leading actor.
