The art detective Johann Friedrich von Allmen, of all people, was staying in a high-class Zurich hotel when a multi-million dollar dahlia painting disappeared from the owner's private suite. What could be more obvious to the eccentric Dahlia Gutbauer than to entrust "Allmen International Inquiries" with the discreet replacement? The order does not bode well, as the thief has been proven to be walking over dead bodies. Allmen is not left with one choice, because the tough lady threatens to put the federal immigration authorities on his Guatemalan butler Carlos. While Allmen hides the blackmail from his companion, Carlos also keeps something to himself. His partner Maria Moreno witnessed a murder shortly after the robbery and therefore has to go into hiding. Allmen soon reveals the first secret of the painting: Dahlia Gutbauer once came into possession of the "dahlias" through a robbery. As with the theft at the time, Allmen suspects romantic motives and targets the unscrupulous businessman Rebler, who is in a relationship with the enchantingly beautiful psychologist Dalia Scheidegger. For the art detective, she is the key to the case - especially since her former friend Claude Tenz also seems to be involved. Allmen's interest in Dalia, which is difficult to keep within the boundaries of her professional life, makes the assignment even more dangerous for him.
