This precursor to later "epic" 1970s disaster films presents 12 hours in the lives of the personnel and passengers at the "Lincoln Airport." Endless problems, professional and personal, are thrown at the various personnel responsible for the safe and proper administration of air traffic, airline management, and aviation at a major US airport. Take one severe snowstorm, add multiple schedules gone awry; one elderly Trans Global Airlines stowaway; shortages; an aging, meretricious pilot; unreasonable, peevish spouses; manpower issues, fuel problems, frozen runways; and equipment malfunctions, and you get just a sample of the obstacles faced by weary, disgruntled personnel and passengers at the Lincoln Airport. Toss in one long-suffering pilot's wife, several stubborn men, office politics and romance, and one passenger with a bomb, and you have the film "Airport" from 1970.
Leave your thoughts about Airport.
Cinema SightWesley LovellBefore there was Airplane! there was Airport, a surprisingly engaging disaster drama that ignited a trend.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzIf it weren't for a mad bomber story line, it would be the perfect empty movie for airlines to show on long flights.
Creative LoafingMatt BrunsonYes, it may be junk, but it's irresistible junk, like cotton candy, chicken nuggets or Gilligan's Island reruns.
Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)Ken HankeIt spawned a sub-genre, but it was old-fashioned when it was new.
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyOne of the most embarrassing films to be nominated for Best Picture and other Oscars, Airport is a trashy flick that began the cycle of disaster movies; the spoof Airport is better and more enjoyable.
The New York TimesVincent CanbyAirport, the film version of Arthur Hailey's novel, is the sort of movie most people mean when they say Hollywood doesn't make movies the way it used to. This isn't just because Airport resembles any number of old Grand Hotel movies. Rather it's because it evokes our nostalgic feelings, not only for the innocence of old movies but also for the innocent old times in which we saw them.
The New YorkerPauline KaelAn empty reshaping of Grand Hotel, held together by disaster in the sky. Airport will be remembered as the trailblazer of the disaster epic, one of the most trivial genres in the history of motion pictures.
User ReviewMike SThe original disaster movie of the 70's is loads of fun to watch with some really good performances by Helen Hays and Gene Stapleton. Helen Hays steels the movie as the widowed stowaway but the movie is more about the action of a plane in jeopardy and an airport that is trying to handle a blizzard of a snow, storm. Get hr popcorn and enjoy the ride.
User ReviewJohn GAirport is an excellent film. It is about a bomber on board an airplane, an airport almost closed by snow, and various personal problems of the people involved. Burt Lancaster and Dean Martin give remarkable performances. The screenplay is well written. George Seaton and Henry Hathaway did great jobs directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama. Airport is a must see.
