Variety - 6/10 by Variety StaffThe picture has immense charm and the actual photography (particularly underwater scenes) and superb scenery make it a good travelog ad for the Great Barrier Reef area where most of it was filmed.
User Review - 10/10 by Lanning :Michael Powell's last directorial endeavor, the resurrection of James Mason's career, and the role that put Helen Mirren on the map. This beautiful little film is a must-see for a stunning Mirren alone, although it is a great comment on the 60s. Thinking about it now, as Powell's last, I see parallels with Shakespeare's The Tempest and even, perhaps, with Faulkner's The Reivers. I say again, flixster friends, this is a true must-see.
User Review - 10/10 by Marco FArtistic devotion in spite of sensual mutual attraction. A heavy movie for its time and still so today in our freer sexual societies.
User Review - 10/10 by Jeff PAn artist who feels he has become jaded by success and life in New York City. He decides that he needs to regain the edge he had as a young artist and returns to Australia. It is here, he meets his muse played by the 24 year old Helen Mirren, in all her naked glory. Like the misconceptions of the general public (well, not always, actually), the Artist does not fancy the model as a desirable woman, but more a creative element...a muse Much like an early version of "Sirens" (which I absolutely love)...the Artist is persecuted by those that are insecure and ignorant of The Artists Way...the editing is choppy, but at times the photography is absolutely glorious...and the film is classified as a "comedy of sorts"...but more drama to me...check it out, then watch Sirens and compare.
User Review - 8/10 by Art SBeautiful film, yound Helen Mirren had so much charm and innocence despite the nude scenes, she is very gorgeous, and the film itself is quite entertaining and nice to watch with wonderful shots of the nature and ocean.
User Review - 8/10 by Paula CJames Mason clearly has a lot of capacity to be a pervy old man, but this movie is really sweet. With a barely legal Helen Mirren, what more could you want? less conservative than today's climate, if only less emotionally conservative than what one might expect from a cradle robbing scenario that might come out these days
User Review - 8/10 by Akavar DThis was the last full length movie directed by Michael Powell. It was many years after the famous Powell & Pressburger partnership created such great movies as "The Red Shoes" & "Black Narcissus". Powell had been branded as box office poison because one of his movies failed to attract viewers. This was a wonderful resurgence and book end for this master director. Placing a 24 year old Helen Mirren with a mature James Mason on an Australian island, Powell explored the evolution of their relationship. Mason's character is a world famous artist who came to the Great Barrier Reef to escape his art and the world. He winds up painting the young Helen Mirren. The beauty of the location accentuates the beauty of the model. Some of the locals decide to insert themselves into this platoinic relationship and help to draw the two even closer emotionally. This movie can be difficult to find, but it is worth the effort. Give yourself a treat.
User Review - 6/10 by Mike BAs always, Helen Mirren is delightful to see. And James Mason finally gets to be with his Lolita. And oh, I did find Mason's mate more aggravating than an Australian fly. For those who haven't experienced them, Australian flies will just never leave you alone. They're aggressive little insects who are attracted to any body with water. Don't sweat, and yet, how can one help but sweat when Helen Mirren is around. She's a gorgeous woman, always has been and will be. A great actress too. This romp does her justice as a start in film. Don't forget to her her cameo appearance in "Oh Lucky Man", made around this same time.
User Review - 6/10 by Maria DI watched all the way through this movie before I found out that the "child" in this movie was Helen Mirren. Who knew she was young once. Actually I didn't like the movie that much. I would have preferred that the painter stayed true to his art and not thrash around with the kid at the end.
User Review - 6/10 by Abu Sayeem Ra very hot movie, but the story line is too predictable.
