Lucas is a little boy who's going blind. The only thing that could save his eyesight is a risky eye operation that could either fix his eyes or blind him for good. Scared, lonely and half-blind, he lets his subconscious fears and desires and grim imagination run loose. He spends a lot of his time spying on people and visiting the local graveyard and the mausoleum. He starts seeing a creepy serial killer everywhere in town, who goes after blind women and stabs them in the eyes. Lucas doesn't tell anyone about this, not even his police officer father. He also starts seeing other people, who are not blind, as if they were blind. Lucas also develops an unhealthy interest in his much older stepsister, who is about to get married and leave their family home, and becomes jealous of her husband to be. Things culminate when he sees a dog he believes to be rabid, and when his pregnant mother finally gives birth to his baby sister. Can Lucas return from the brink of sanity and what, if anything, of the things he sees is real?

Movie Reviews

EmanuelLevy.Com - 6/10 by Emanuel LevyDebut of Mark People (co-writer of Bertolucci's Last Emperor) is a borderline pretentious cerebral thriller, aiming at delving into the inner workings of the mind, but acting by young protag Keyworth and James Fox and Fanny Ardant as his parents is good.
User Review - 8/10 by Richard DThe directorial debut of Mark Peploe, who wrote Antonioni's "The Passenger" and "The Last Emperor" and "The Sheltering Sky" for Bertolucci. It's pretty wonderful at capturing the perspective of a child in a fairly irrationally hostile environment. Then ... partway through, the film pulls the rug out from under you and proceeds to tell a different story with a remarkably different kind of threat. Not an easy film, but one that rewards patience. The excellent cast includes James Fox, Paul McGann, David Thewlis and Catriona MacColl.
User Review - 8/10 by Barbara GOne of the best movie twists I have ever seen. Just watch it.
User Review - 6/10 by Sean CSo slow that at times, I thought it was moving backwards.
User Review - 6/10 by cheyenne fLucas (Ben Keyworth) lives in an area with a lot of blind people. Even his mother is blind. There is unfortunately a killer going around murdering the helpless blind citizens. And little Lucas snoops around town trying to find out the identity of the murderer. His detective work pays off when he rescues a woman from the clutches of the killer. I know it seems like I gave the entire movie away, but honestly I haven?t. All of these events I just described are just the first 45 minutes of the film. And all of them are entirely fabricated in the mind of Lucas. Turns out that Lucas is losing his eye sight, and is in need of surgery to hopefully correct it. He uses his imagination to help him cope with what is happening to him, which becomes a bit dangerous the further his condition gets. I liked Afraid of the Dark, but I didn?t love it. I thought it had a lot of interesting ideas to it, and a decent story as well. The cast was pretty nice, but not all that effective. While the movie is a psychological thriller, it doesn?t do a great job at getting inside your head. And even the ending where an infant child?s life is in danger, I never felt a sense of urgency for what was going on. But I liked it enough. It isn?t a movie that I am going to tell you to go out and rent. But if you see it playing one night on television, it might be worth at least one viewing. You might end up liking it as well.
User Review - 4/10 by Anna QStrange if slightly dull psycho thriller. A young lad with poor eyesight and an over active imagination believes he knows the I.d. Of a local serial killer preying on the local blind club.
