VarietyVariety StaffThe settings are powerfully like real. A Senate hearing room, the Senate itself, a party home in immediate Washington and varying apartments plus a place in DC suburbia all have the look of genuineness.
Cinema SightWesley LovellYou can't hire a judge without breaking a few nerves. This insightful political film is terrific.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzViewing it today, its quaintness and timidness make it seem out of step with the even more insidious contemporary times.
Slant MagazineEric HendersonPreminger's visual savvy turns that most staid and insufferable of social terrariums, the floor of the U.S. Senate, into a vibrant, perpetually shifting Voronoi diagram.
EmanuelLevy.ComEmanuel LevyA poignant, biting expose of the American political process, boasting a large ensemble of terrific actors (Fonda, Laughton), Preminger's saga set the trend of future, more sensationalitsic political melodramas like Fail Safe and All the President's Men.
Time OutTom MilneGrips like a vice thanks to the skill with which Preminger's stunning mise en scène absorbs documentary detail.
User ReviewRick QAfter the sucess of Anatomy of a Murder ,director Otto Preminger cast his scornful eye over the world of Washington politics and came up with an outstanding political thriller . The US president is a dying man who wants to elect Robert Leffingwell (Henry Fonda) as his new secretary of state. Trouble is powerful forces are at work on both sides which will shake up this system and ultimately lead to tragedy. Premingers cast serves him well with Peter Lawford as a playboy senator and Walter Pidgeon as Senator Munson who is staging a frantic race to get Leffingwell elected. We also get a daring subtext for its time in the shape of a gay blackmail case ,the film was the first to show a gay bar and while it may be cliched to our eyes Preminger must have had some guts to run this past the studio. But above all this is CharlesLaughton as Southern Senator Seab Cooley a man out of time who knows how to play the Washington game with the best of them. One look from Laughtons face conveys a thousand words and its a fitting tribute to him as this was his last film . The other good part about the film ,is the fact Preminger uses actual Washington loactions as opossed to obvious studio sets ,we really get a feel for the hub of American power and for that alone this film should be commended.
User ReviewJonathan SThis is how our big, ugly machine works. A splendid all-star cast and Preminger's direction keep this gripping political drama going to its final moments.
User ReviewMiguel AA brilliant examination of American politics, blind hypocrisy, idealism, and self-interest. For my money, it's one of Don Murray's finest performances. The sets and locations are excellent, and as best as I can tell, at least some are authentic. (The film's trailer indicates that certain scenes were actually filmed in a real senate committee room!) Altogether, an excellent and exciting film.
