In the North Pennines, tenant farmers Tom and Kay spend their days looking after their flock of prized sheep, and hoping that this will be the year they breed the perfect one. Director Magali Pettier, herself a farmer's daughter, follows a year in their lives, capturing both the stark, stunning beauty of the landscape, and the brutally hard graft it takes just to survive. Their three children are growing up close to the land, attending a school entirely comprised of farmers' children, thoroughly immersed in their remote rural world. As the seasons change the couple help birth, groom, nurture and sell their sheep - even when the odds often seems stacked against them. A treat for the senses, Addicted to Sheep allows us to experience life on a hill farm - without having to get mucked in ourselves.

Movie Reviews

Film Inquiry - 8/10 by Becky KuklaDespite its roughness and lack of 'drama', Addicted to Sheep truly embodies the nature of the ob-doc.
Empire Magazine - 8/10 by David ParkinsonA rare glimpse at the hardslogging realities of country life.
The Herald (Scotland) - 8/10 by Alison RowatThere was a danger here that [director Magali] Pettier could have made a glossy film for townies in search of escapism, but she does not shy away from showing the downsides of the farming life.
Times (UK) - 6/10 by Kate MuirAddicted to Sheep is the rather racy title of a charming documentary about a year in the life of a family on a hill farm in the north Pennines.
Little White Lies - 4/10 by Sophie Monks KaufmanIf you love staring at sheep for long periods of time, this may be your Citizen Kane.
User Review - 10/10 by John FWonderful film: fascinating and absorbing. A documentary about tenant farmers raising Swaledale sheep in the north Pennines doesn't sound very exciting, but it manages to be completely gripping all the way through, beautifully observed, clear-sighted, and often funny. One of the best and most enjoyable documentary films I've ever seen.
