User Review - 10/10 by Robert AAfter watching this once and then watching it with commentary I now have a deep seeded connection with this movie. I could write a long essay about it. It premiered at the same time as The Last Picture Show, even in the same theater. The Last Picture Show is also one of my favorites of the BBS movies. The Last Picture Show was a huge success while A Safe Place was a huge failure. The movie is not a linear storyline that can be followed like a normal movie. It's something to be followed on an emotional level. It is a perfect example of a movie that is probably taking place inside of someone's head. All of the scenes are blended together and there is a dreamlike surreality to everything. I was reminded of A Catcher in the Rye when I watched it the first time, only hints of the book though. Then I watch it with commentary and find out that Henry Jaglom said that book, and Salinger, were a big influence on him. That blew my mind. I didn't really pick up on the connections to the novel, there was just the slightness that reminded me of it and the movie also had other scenes that reminded me of a friend who told me to read the book so I wasn't even thinking the book had anything to do with the movie, just coincidence, but it was no coincidence. I was going on an inside journey of my own while watching this movie twice tonight. There are a few dialogue scenes that are beautiful and then it turns out they weren't written they were real stories told from the people who experienced them. That pureness of a scene is something that is hard to fake. At first I was turned off by the blending of scenes but after finding out the writer/director's intentions it seemed perfectly understandable. I guess I'm one of the few that has some kind of deep seeded connection with this movie and I like it even more because I'm in a minority. The movie reminded me of other movies I have seen, Annie Hall, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind to name a couple. The elements of relationships and love and memories that is tossed around really put this movie in the realm of those movies. This will be one movie I will look back on and I'd say it would be one of the movies that made me want to be a film maker. I will be a film maker, I have decided. This is just one of the movies I needed to watch on my journey to becoming one.
User Review - 8/10 by Tom BI have a habit of overrating the films in this box set, but they are so unique and speak to me on such a basic memory level I have to give in and gush. This is not for every filmgoer, but for those who appreciate the journey of this kind of film the rewards are rich and sound a deep bell. Many echoes for me in this one, quite a few surprises. Delight to see Orson Welles, and astonishing to see the camera linger on Tuesday Weld, obviously in love with her face. Reminiscent of Godard that way, jagged cutting, interrupted music, overlapping times and moments, a man asking questions but we only see the woman answering. A smattering of the commentary was tantalizing, to be imbibed at a later date. Jaglom is thoughtful and expressive and tells a good story. The beauty of the look of the film is fresh. The journey of the story is into a somewhat deep pain, and yet the magic of art is there for a reason. We can sample the feeling of savoring a summer day, the passage of time, the winding ways of a heavy thought process towards an overwhelming and poet decision (oh, do not ask what is it). Not an easy film to stay awake through, but captures time and era, many things, and the print is breathtaking.
User Review - 6/10 by Mike HThere are some strong moments in A Safe Place, although the movie doesn't really take on a narrative form at any point, and therefore never arrives anywhere; this isn't off-putting, though, as the movie never gives you the sense that it is going to arrive anywhere. Like the dim-minded flower children it presents, any drama, relatability, or re-watchability that you derive from the movie will be found in moments, and not from an arc or anything as complex. The main female character is belligerently idiotic, but some good performances are captured from most or all of the cast.
User Review - 6/10 by Zoran SA fairly interesting idea for a short. Unfortunately, it's a feature.
User Review - 6/10 by Danny BThe disjointed narrative reminds me a lot of the French New Wave, but at times a bit too polished. Jaglom uses the romance of memory and childhood to explore the character of Noah as she wrestles with her memories, dreams, and the space in between.
User Review - 4/10 by Eric MA muddled and incoherent romantic fantasy from Henry Jaglom, "A Safe Place" is made watchable only by the welcome presence of Orson Welles as a mysterious Central Park magician and a lovely soundtrack of French pop songs.
User Review - 4/10 by Paul DFractured, repetitive and too artsy for its own good. This movie somehow made an extremely simple story incredibly confusing and sort of frustrating. Not that Head and Drive, He Said were anything to write home about, but A Safe Place is probably the least impressive BBS film. Tuesday Weld and Jack Nicholson are both charismatic and enjoyable, but sadly, Orson Welles is not.
User Review - 4/10 by Brendan RA girl's fantasy keeps getting off track of the story and what's trying to get its point across.
User Review - 2/10 by Daniel KA pretentious piece of shit that is so exhausting even Orson Welles performing magic can't keep you interested.
User Review - 2/10 by Brad GOrson Welles has a terrifying laugh. Jack Nicholson is impossibly charming even when he's a bore. And Philip Proctor's confused lover is somewhat engaging. But Tuesday Weld, or her fractured character is frustratingly, annoyingly whiney and less pathetic as she is a dimwit. That sounds harsh. It's probably too harsh. I certainly was not in the right headspace for this flick, but I seriously doubt I'll approach this film again. VF.
