Full Plot Details

Widowed Bertha Jacoby has led a relatively sheltered, monocultural existence in the same predominantly Jewish Brooklyn neighborhood for most of her adult life, and as such has fairly traditional Jewish values. She is taken aback not only when her son-in-law Jerry Black announces that he and Bertha's daughter Alice Black are moving to Tokyo on Jerry's next diplomatic corps assignment, but that they want her to move there with them so that she won't be all alone. Despite her anti-Japanese sentiments, David, her only son, having been killed in World War II in the Pacific Theater, Bertha reluctantly agrees. They will fly from New York City to San Francisco, and sail from there. Against the odds, Bertha befriends on board the ship Koichi Asano, a wealthy widowed Japanese businessman with whom Jerry and the American contingent will be entering into sensitive negotiations. Jerry and Alice are wary of Bertha and Mr. Asano's friendship, not only because of the cultural differences, but because they believe Mr. Asano's sole motive may be to get the upper hand in the negotiations in going through Alice's mother. However, Bertha and Mr. Asano may have a deeper connection than either would have thought, and that can overcome each of their deep seated cultural differences.

EmanuelLevy.Com - 6/10 by Emanuel LevyThough well intentioned in message, Mervyn LeRoy's version of the popular stage play is overacted by Rosalind Russell as the Jewish widow and miscast with Alec Guinness as the Japanese businessman
User Review - 10/10 by Kate HAlec Guiness can do anything, including playing a Japanese Man.
User Review - 10/10 by Karen GOkay, so it was the early Sixties and Alec Guiness plays a Japanese man. Remember Shirley MacLaine as an Indian in "Around the World in 80 Days"? Anyway, this is a sleeper. While its presentation seems hokey to us today, the content and approach was very avante garde for 1961. If you are a socially aware person I highly recommend this movie.
User Review - 10/10 by Bernadette MA sweet movie with a timeless message about overcoming prejudice. Now on DVD!!
User Review - 10/10 by Dirk SI managed to stumble across this movie being aired on TV once again yesterday. Having seen it once before, I couldn't help but sit down and watch it again. It is an outstanding movie, portraying the cultural variations between the US and Japan following WWII. Sir Alec Guinness and Rosalind Russell bring a warmth and true depth of character which only comes from life experience. I particularly found the mix of Japanese culture with Jewish culture to be very appropos, and indeed the ability of Mr Jacoby to identify with the cultural traditions of the Japanese, seemed to stem from an understanding of her own ancestral culture. Some of the minor acting roles are not as good, but then they are more on the periphery, and don't really detract all that much from the main story and the characters of Mr Asano and Mrs Jacoby. Look out for the actress whom voiced Betty Boop as Mrs Jacobys' rather less than accepting neighbour, and a young George Takai.
User Review - 8/10 by Harvey AOn the face of it, you wouldn't think this word work--these stars, this plot, this period--but it does, and quite well. Both leads are exceptional. If you're looking for history and conflict, this one isn't for you. But if you want to feel a warm sense of satisfaction and pleasure, you'll be happy you decided to watch.
User Review - 8/10 by Bryan BWithin this overlong film is a sweet romance. To the cutting room!
User Review - 6/10 by Lynda MAdmittedly, it's progressive for its time, but as a typical easily-offended Asian, I couldn't stand Alec Guinness as a Japanese man.
User Review - 6/10 by Greg WA Majority of One stars Rosalind Russell and Alec Guinness, and I do have to agree with those that say they were both miscast in this film - especially Guinness who plays a Japanese man. The movie for it's time gets a nod for a film about prejudices between race and cultures, but then they cast an Englishman (Guinness) with his eyes taped back to look slanted and an not so great Japanese accent. The story of a Jewish widow (Russell) and a Japanese widower (Guinness) who meet on a cruise ship. Her son-in-law is headed to Japan with his mother-n-law and wife where he is going to do some business with the Japanese gentleman that Guinness plays and he and his wife are unhappy when Russell and Guinness become romantic. It's a light comedy but with a well pointed point of view.
User Review - 6/10 by Matthew RKind of a strange film, took me awhile to realize Alec Guinness is supposed to be acting a japanese man -- when his accent is totally wrong and he does not resemble a japanese in any way. Decent film otherwise.
