Emotionally raw and uncommonly observant, this coming-of-age drama balances the pull of family obligation against personal aspirations. Madison Davenport beautifully conveys the mixture of fierce love and grueling weariness she feels while embracing her role as caregiver, a responsibility that threatens to consume the entirety of her life. And Taryn Manning is equally impressive in avoiding any trace of caricature in her portrayal of mental illness, preserving Gloria's dignity even as her behavior becomes more erratic. Director Valerie Weiss has found an ideal collaboration in screenwriter Moira McMahon Leeper, making her feature debut. By turns endearing, unsettling, and ultimately moving, A Light Beneath Their Feet is a triumph of empathetic filmmaking. There are no heroes and villains in this story, just ordinary people struggling to create a sense of normalcy in their day-to-day existence.

Movie Reviews

RogerEbert.com - 10/10 by Matt FagerholmA Light Beneath Their Feet is a triumph of empathetic filmmaking. It will enthrall viewers merely seeking a coming-of-age yarn, and it contains one of the loveliest prom scenes in recent memory.
The Hollywood Reporter - 7/10 by Frank ScheckThe film's strength lies in its honest and realistic portrayal of mental illness and the toll it exacts on those in its sufferer's orbit.
Flickering Myth - 4/10 by Robert KojderIt's hard to muster up the willpower to care about any of this.
User Review - 10/10 by Irene Sa very strong drama about a high school senior who has to make a decision of whether to stay local and take care of her mentally bipolar mother or choose to leave and start her college life away from home. a powerful performance.
User Review - 8/10 by Logan M"A Light Beneath Their Feet" often handles its potentially dark material with a little too much care, but that doesn't stop it from being a truly rich and sincere mother/daughter drama.
User Review - 8/10 by David JA Light Beneath Their Feet has a few moments where it addresses the theme of bipolar disability perhaps too directly (as in, abruptly in the middle of a plot scene), but its wonderfully acted by the two leads and has a story that has to be very relatable for some of the college-bound people out there.
User Review - 8/10 by Lee MBetween a 7/10 and 8/10, the film's strength lies in its honest and realistic portrayal of mental illness and the toll it exacts on those in its sufferer's orbit. It manages to do this with a sense of humor that does not oversimplify. Impressive.
