Director Martin Scorsese speaks candidly and passionately about one of his formative filmmaking influences: the late Elia Kazan. Utilizing precisely chosen clips from Kazan's signature films including "On the Waterfront," "A Streetcar Named Desire," "Gentleman's Agreement," "Baby Doll," "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," "A Face in the Crowd," "America, America," and "The Last Tycoon," and interview footage of the director himself, co-directors Scorsese and Kent Jones recount the director's tumultuous journey from the Group Theatre to the Hollywood A-list to the thicket of the blacklist. But most of all, they make a powerful case for Kazan as a profoundly personal artist working in a famously impersonal industry.

Oregonian - 8/10 by Shawn LevyA deeply personal film in which Martin Scorsese, who co-directed and co-wrote, speaks at loving length about the impact that Kazan's films had on him.
User Review - 10/10 by Jack KA loving tribute to Kazan, and especially powerful because of Scorsese's close, personal connection to the pictures, if not the man.
User Review - 10/10 by Adam SProbably one of the best dedication documentaries I have ever seen. The way Scorsese discusses Kazan's work displays his true admiration, inspiration, and love for this great director. Scorsese isn't merely a person or director discussing the significance of the director; instead, he plays the role of someone who was truly inspired by the work. That is evident in the way Scorsese talks about not just the work, but the man. If you admire Scorsese, if you admire Kazan, this is the documentary for you. Made out of pure love and admiration from a true place.

User Review - 10/10 by Paolo MMartin Scorsese to Elia Kazan: "It always had to stay between me and the movies, and the only way I can tell you how much you meant to me was by making movies" .
User Review - 8/10 by John HA great and personal film from Martin Scorsese. For those who love Elia Kazan's films, this is a real treat.
User Review - 8/10 by Ross MSaw this as a part of the Sydney Film festival. This is a very candid, personal look at the influence of one of cinema's great directors on another great director. Very well told and concise. Goes into alot of Kazan's films particulary - On the waterfront, east of eden, a tree groes in brooklyn and america america. I'm a sucker for documentaries about film and particulary film directors.
User Review - 8/10 by Byron BI think I saw this on TCM a few years back. It is also included in The Elia Kazan Collection DVD box set. Scorsese hosts this love letter to the cinematic legacy of Kazan. Elia Kazan started in theatre as an actor and developed into a Broadway director before being called to Hollywood. Scorsese talks personally about growing up and seeing Kazan's movies with characters and locations that were familiar to fellow New Yorker Scorsese. Lots of clips from the films included in the DVD collection are shared. This doc touches upon the House UnAmerican Activities Committee hearings, but is not as much about Kazan's biography as his films influence on Scorsese.
