Movie Reviews

Film Thrills - 8/10 by Deirdre CrimminsThis is not the easiest film to just sit back and soak in, but it is very satisfying to do the work.
New York Times - 8/10 by Jeannette CatsoulisViewed simply as a horror movie, A Horrible Way to Die is diverting; viewed as commentary on our willingness to tune out evil for the sake of emotional connection, it's devastating.
FEARnet - 8/10 by Scott WeinbergA smart, low-budget 'road thriller' that goes to some very dark places.
Slant Magazine - 4/10 by Kalvin HenelyThe adventitious use of loud and strange blasts of music may theoretically make sense to heighten the film's creepiness, but here, like everything else, they don't exactly make a perfect fit and serve more as the final nail in the coffin for the film's lack of tonal cohesion.
User Review - 10/10 by BRUNO VA Horrible Way to Die is unlike almost any serial killer film you have ever seen--it is primarily a drama, so do not expect the constant pyrotechnics of a traditional horror film or thriller centering around a serial killer. Instead of a slasher or detective film, A Horrible Way to Die centers on the struggles of a recovering alcoholic woman who is trying to come to terms with having dated a serial killer in the past. When a potential new love interest enters the picture and her serial killer ex escapes from prison, then the plot begins to thicken. The film interweaves present with past in way that explores Sarah's, the main character's, consciousness as she attempts to wrestle with the demons of her past in the present. Director Adam Wingard adopts a completely alienating aesthetic in which the camera constantly floats away from the main action, drifts out of focus, etc. in ways that create a surreal experience for the viewer. Ultimately, the film's aesthetic refuses all of the conventions of the genre and instead chooses to alienate the viewer. The viewer's alienation mirrors the alienation felt by both Sarah (the victim) and Garrick (the killer) and allows the film to become a powerful examination of isolation, addiction, and the desire for connection in a world structured by simulacra. In the end, A Horrible Way to Die delivers on the brutality as well, but it is a slow, dramatic build that makes the conclusion all the more powerful and haunting.
User Review - 10/10 by David PI saw a rough cut of this movie about 2 years ago and loved it then. Now that I've finally seen the finished film I love it even more. This is not your typical serial killer movie that relies on gruesome murders nor a "star" performance. This thriller/horror movie, produced for less than a million dollars, relies heavily on a brooding atmosphere and forces you to pay attention by playing with the narrative structure. If you think a good serial killer movie is something like Kiss The Girls or a great thriller movie is something like Sleeping With The Enemy then this movie is probably not for you.
User Review - 8/10 by Ruby HA good thing about low-budget indie films is that the director can go about realizing his or her vision without dreaded studio interference and box-office expectations. Here, Adam Wingard, is taking the narrow road and mostly succeeds. It is all more impressive when you realize that the wobbly camera work will stick until the end and that the plot will develop at its own leisure. But every scene is beautifully captured in dim lights and melancholic colors, in cold rural landscapes and Christmas-lighted bedrooms, all emphasizing some of the worse feelings, namely, addiction and living in fear. Warm, fuzzy and horrifyingly physical. Cast is great, supporting cast especially. The score is fantastic and perfectly supplements the director's flawless editing. Blood and gore are neither here nor there, a striking scene or two and that's about it. Perhaps the best compliment I could give the film would be that it reminded me of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Not for everyone then but I liked it.
User Review - 8/10 by Mark KSlow burning and almost dreamlike with a clever twist in it's tail, this is an above average thriller only let down by the excessive use of shakycam
User Review - 8/10 by Jim LFor a low budget film, this is a really good movie. The story was interesting enough and the acting was great. I think the plot was basic, but the director did a good job of telling the story even if it was very simple. I was really happy I watched this film!
User Review - 8/10 by Justin BVastly underrated. The biggest complaint I've heard is about the camerawork which I understand, although I found the "wandercam" to be really effective. For some reason it worked for me. Besides that I thought all of the performances were great and the film had me engaged. It's funny how the film can feel so realistic but also have a dreamlike quality. The only thing that started to feel a little "off" was the ending. I would have preferred the original ending they had planned but I'm still satisfied overall.
