The true story of Operation Market Garden, the Allies attempt, in September 1944, to hasten the end of World War II by driving through Belgium and Holland into Germany. The idea was for U.S. airborne divisions to take the towns of Eindhoven and Nijmegen and a British airborne division, reinforced by a Polish airborne brigade, to take the town of Arnhem. They would be reinforced, in due course and in turn, by the British XXX Corps, land-based and driving up from the British lines in the south. The key to the operation was the bridges, as if the Germans held or blew them, the paratroopers could not be relieved. Faulty intelligence, Allied high command hubris, and stubborn German resistance would ensure that Arnhem was a bridge too far.

Spirituality and PracticeFrederic and Mary Ann BrussatRecreates this complicated and tragic military venture with breathtaking sweep, historical accuracy and sober-eyed humanism.
Groucho ReviewsPeter CanaveseConsistently reinforces the horrors of war by depicting not only the disasterous military engagements and their toll on heroes, but also the witless political decisions that led to needless, excessive loss of life. [Blu-Ray]
Portland OregonianTed MaharOne may feel limitations on the dramatic side, but Bridge is an unqualified pictorial achievement.
The New York TimesVincent CanbyThe movie is massive, shapeless, often unexpectedly moving, confusing, sad, vivid and very, very long.
EmpireIan NathanThis sprawling epic rewards patience with an emotional pay-off and non-triumphant ending that reminds us all too starkly of the sacrifices made during war.
Video-Reviewmaster.comSteve CrumDozens of stars do not a classic WWII flick make. James Caan fares best of them all in a memorable sequence.
Ozus' World Movie ReviewsDennis SchwartzThough overlong, muddled, ponderous and overbaked, it's not without some impressive moments.
The Globe and Mail (Toronto)Robert MartinA Bridge Too Far is a fantastic historical and cinematic achievement but, if you're not a die-hard war obsessive, prepare to snooze.
ChristyLemire.comChristy LemireIt would seem impossible to go wrong with such an incredible, all-star cast - which makes A Bridge Too Far such a frustrating misfire (no pun intended).
RogerEbert.comRoger EbertThe movie's big and expensive and filled with stars, but it's not an epic. It's the longest B-grade war movie ever made.
