Spirituality and Practice - 10/10 by Frederic and Mary Ann BrussatA touching and authentic immigrant tale that touches the heart and is One of the Best Films of 2011.
Boxoffice Magazine - 10/10 by Pete HammondThe timing is right for this remarkable and riveting family drama which puts a human face on the hot-button topic of immigration in such effective and emotional terms that you may never look at the subject in the same way again.
Detroit News - 9/10 by Tom LongThe people here seem real, their world is shaky at best, and the political tension that permeates everything in this film feels palpable.
Seattle Times - 9/10 by John HartlWeitz, who directed the excellent 2002 Hugh Grant movie, "About a Boy," once more does a sensitive job with iffy material.
Toronto Star - 9/10 by Greg QuillPersonalizes the illegal immigrant experience and digs much deeper into what has become a national disgrace.
Television Without Pity - 9/10 by Ethan AlterA Better Life is noble to the very end and that ends up being its undoing.
Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC) - 9/10 by Ken HankeEssentially a variation on Vittorio De Sica's The Bicycle Thief, but it has a vitality and resonance all its own.
NECN - 9/10 by Erick WeberA Better Life is a half-step removed from the Hallmark Hall of Fame.
AwardsCircuit.com - 9/10 by Clayton DavisThe film's beautiful simplicity is carried massively on the work of Demián Bichir, instantly and surely one of the best performances seen in 2011.
Chicago Reader - 9/10 by Andrea GronvallA major star in Mexico, Bichir is quietly affecting as the father, a humble striver who faces loss at every turn.
