San Francisco ExaminerJeffrey M. AndersonA staid, static movie that wins us over with its outstanding performances and its love of books.
ColeSmithey.comCole Smithey"84 Charing Cross Road" is a valuable film for all of the right reasons of theatrical balance and narrative truth. It is a movie that hits you like a live play.
Time OutGeoff AndrewThe film has nothing to do with easy nostalgia; it's about real, credible people, and as such finally becomes very moving.
eFilmCritic.comScott WeinbergHopkins and Dench are wonderful together.
User ReviewMillo TI've seen this movie many times and I still absolutely love it.
User ReviewTeresa RThis is one of my very favorite movies. I have a digital copy and watch it frequently. It's such a bitter sweet story of unrealized love. Plus Anne Bancroft, Sir Anthony Hopkins, and Dame Judi Dench star in this great film. The story takes place starting in the days just following WWII and follows a trans-Atlantic love via correspondence between a Londoner, and a New Yorker. There's no one inexplicably naked and nothing explodes. And they manage to tell the entire story without using CGI. It's charming. I give it my highest rating and endorsement.
User ReviewKatie MSome 25 years later still one of the most unusual, romantic, under-stated, positive, heart-warming, and melancholy films. You don't see anything like this at any time. The casting is perfect, especially Anthony Hopkins. This is a film that will forever stay close to hearts of many, many adoring fans.
User ReviewTuomas SA beautiful, real movie about a 40-year friendship started over a mutual love of books. In a time when communication via phone, email etc is the norm, it is nice to remember that letters were (and are) a beautiful, powerful way to communicate. Bancroft and Hopkins were amazing.
User ReviewLetrise RIf you enjoy books, this is the movie for you.
User ReviewHeidi WAnne Bancroft & Anthony Hopkins are brilliant as expected. Lovely story told through the power of personal letter-writing. There is no reference in the film, but discovered via TCM that this was a true story which made it exceptionally powerful. A must see.
