Philippe Pétain was born in 1856 in Cauchy-à-la-Tour, Pas-de-Calais, France. Henri Philippe Benoni Omer Joseph Pétain, more simply known under the name of Philippe Pétain, né le 24 avril 1856 à Cauchy-à-la-Tour (Pas-de-Calais) and died July 23, 1951 in Port-Joinville on the island of Yeu (Vendée), is a soldier, diplomat, politician and man of the French State. Military leader in the important action during the First world War, Pétain is generally presented as the "winner of the battle of Verdun" and, with Georges Clemenceau, as the architect of the turnaround in the morale of the troops after the mutinies of 1917. He was appointed commander-in-chief of the French forces and the rest until the end of the war, although in 1918, the leadership of all the allied armies eludes him in favour of his rival Ferdinand Foch. He was made marshal of France in November 1918. In 1925, Pétain became commander of the French forces fighting on the side of Spain in the war of the Rif, in the place du maréchal Lyautey to this post since 1912. The aura of immense prestige in the aftermath of the war, Pétain became an academician in 1929, and is briefly the functions of the minister of War, from February to November 1934, then ambassador in Spain (1939). Reminded the government on 17 may 1940 at the time of the German invasion, he was opposed to the continuation of a war that he considers as lost and which he imputes soon the liability to the republican regime. Leader of the supporters of the stop the fighting, he became chairman of the Board, replacing Paul Reynaud on the evening of 16 June, and called, from the 17, to stop fighting. His sentence is commuted to life imprisonment by general de Gaulle, head of the provisional Government of the French Republic. He died in detention on the island of Yeu, where he is buried. Aged 84 years in July, 1940, Philippe Pétain remains to this day the head of State the oldest person in the History of France.
