Following his early stint with the hip-hop act, I. D. U., his initial big success in the music industry came in co-producing and co-writing the cut "U Want to Know." D's solo debut, Brown Sugar, sold double platinum, while his second album, Voodoo, sold a million units. He is an early proponent of the musical movement known as neo soul.
