User Review - 8/10 by Dan P A very fine film. Covers pretty much what you would expect from a WWII naval movie, but does it all pretty well. Most impressive was the first-rate photography, much better than I expected from a cinematographer I'd never heard of, on a film I wasn't aware of until a few days ago. Most viewers under 40 will recognize Denholm Elliot as Dr. Marcus Brody from the Indiana Jones series.
User Review - 8/10 by xGary X One of the all time great British war films - not glamourising the harsh realities of naval warfare, and also showing the brutal truths about what happens at home, when at sea.
User Review - 8/10 by Dave J Thursday, May 1, 2014 (1953) The Cruel Sea WAR Based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Monsarrat which focuses on a particular PT boat called "The Compass Rose" and it's crew during WWII. It appears that thy only have only 2 objectives, and they're 1) to destroy any apparent German subs, and 2) locate and then aid any known survivors who're still in the sea. Viewers can sometimes get the conflicting sense on some of the difficult choices an admiral have to make, as well as the odds they're facing while on sea. It stars Jack Hawkins as the admiral and Paul Rhys as First lieutenant Keith Lockhart also called number 1. Very personal and observant examination as it shows the difficulty regarding commanding a PT boat, and how it affects relatives and family back home. Actual archive war footage was also used for great affect in this movie. 3 out of 4 stars
User Review - 6/10 by Greg H Proper Sunday afternoon WWII fare with Britain's finest acting talent on display. You feel like you've lived through 1939-45 with them. So many moments tug at the heartstrings. They don't make them like this anymore.
