Movie Reviews

Seattle Post-Intelligencer - 6/10 by Paula Nechak Sex and Death falls into the category of those unfortunate films in that it's a schoolboy's wet dream slathered in smug self-back patting and wish-fantasy run amok, all told with the deftness of a piano falling out of the sky and onto our heads.
Combustible Celluloid - 5/10 by Jeffrey M. Anderson Admittedly, it doesn't have many belly laughs, but if you're tuned into Waters' peculiar, highly intelligent comedy style it's a fascinating watch.
The Globe and Mail (Toronto) - 5/10 by Rick Groen As cinematic flops go, nothing falls quite as hard as a failed black comedy.
Los Angeles Daily News - 5/10 by Glenn Whipp The movie aims to be an unbridled sex farce, but the sex is never all that hot and the jokes are rarely all that funny.
TV Guide Magazine - 4/10 by Ken Fox It's all a pretentious bore that feels twice as long as it's two-hour running time.
TV Guide's Movie Guide - 4/10 by Ken Fox It's all a pretentious bore that feels twice as long as it's two-hour running time.
Salon.com - 4/10 by Andrew O'Hehir Even if the actual movie is an awkward, uncinematic mishmash. Waters has at least tried to write a sex comedy that isn't aimed at titty-fixated 17-year-olds, and at its best Sex and Death 101 has a fast, clever rhythm that almost sings.
Jam! Movies - 4/10 by Liz Braun The film works hard to be a dark, grown up, romantic comedy (plenty of sex, nudity, bad language and philosophy) and yet it winds up being every bit as childish as most other pictures in the genre.
Seattle Times - 4/10 by John Hartl As a writer, Waters is best-known for creating Ryder's sharp black comedy, Heathers, and Bruce Willis' self-indulgent bomb, Hudson Hawk. As a director, he tends to waste actors, and he fails to establish a consistent comic tone.
The New York Times - 3/10 by Manohla Dargis The appealing Mr. Baker never manages to find the right tone for the material, partly because he’s been seriously miscast (he radiates too much decency and intelligence for the role), though more because Mr. Waters never establishes a coherent tone for either the character or his situation.
New York Daily News - 3/10 by Joe Neumaier What a sorry reunion for Ryder and writer-director Daniel Waters, who scripted her far better dark comedy Heathers back in 1989.
Village Voice - 3/10 by Nick Pinkerton Stupid monikers are just one symptom of a stultifying, overwritten cleverness that substitutes quirk for character.
